Types of Heat Transfer

Conducted Heat

Conducted Heat

This type of heat transfers through or from a solid object to another.

The transfer begins on the warm end or body and moves towards the cold (think of an iron rod near a fire). The end touching the fire will heat up first making its way until the other end of the rod is also hot. The material an object is made from will affect the speed at which it will heat up. For instance, a metal wire will definitely heat quicker than wood.

Convection Heat

Convection Heat

Convection heat is transferred through fluid like air or water and is the most common form of space heating.

When air is heated, its particles are less dense and rise away from the heat source, but once they start to cool down, they are pushed downward by the heated particles. The cool air is now near the source and will get reheated and will rise up once more creating a cycle until the whole space reaches the set temperature.

Radiant Heat

Radiant Heat

Radiant heat is emitted and absorbed directly by objects or people instead of heating the air in the space.

Radiant heat is only converted from energy when it hits or is absorbed by a body or object. A great example of radiant heat comes from the sun. Suppose it’s a cold, but sunny winter day, and you stand under the sunshine, you can feel the radiant heat produced by the sun, but when you go in the shade, you can no longer feel the heat.

Different Kinds of Heaters by Matrix Industrial Products

These heaters can be classified in four different categories: ceramic, fan, infrared and oil filled space heaters. No matter the category, all models are electrical.

Ceramic Space Heaters

This type of heater has ceramic plates that will heat up when electricity goes through the attached metal coils. All Matrix ceramic space heaters come with fans which accelerates the warming process by distributing the heated air. These space heaters use convection heat.

Fan Space Heaters

Fan space heaters are very much similar to ceramic, but metal coils are heating up instead of the plates. Therefore, it also uses convection heat.

Infrared Space Heaters

Infrared space heaters use radiant heat which means they don’t heat the air or the room, but the objects and people around it. Although they don’t need fans to operate, Matrix models are all equipped with fans to speed up the heating process.

Oil Filled Space Heaters

These heaters resemble old-fashioned radiators from older homes. They are filled with diathermic oil that heats up and circulates through the columns. It uses convection heat since it radiates off the unit to warm the space.
