The purpose of high-visibility clothing is to make the wearer more visible to others and to stand out from their environment, especially to vehicles. Ultimately, the goal of this type of clothing is to minimize the possibility of workplace accidents.
The basic construction of high-visibility clothing follows two main attributes: fluorescent base material to stand out during daytime, and reflective stripes on top of the base layer to help stand out at night.
CSA lists three classes of garments based on body coverage. Class 1 provides the lowest recognized coverage and good visibility. Class 2 provides moderate body coverage and superior visibility. Class 3 provides the greatest body coverage and highest visibility.
Basic CSA standards require certain features for high-visibility clothing. Firstly, it needs to include a waist-level horizontal stripe/band that goes completely around the clothing item. It must also include two vertical stripes on the front passing over the shoulders and down to the waist, as well as a symmetrical "X" on the back extending from the shoulders to the waist. For Class 3 apparel, stripes/bands encircling both arms and legs are added to create extra visibility.
From traffic cones and delineators, to crowd control barriers and flags, there are many options to choose from when it comes to traffic safety. Picking the right equipment for the application at hand will play a vital role in providing the best possible safety for everyone involved.
Traffic cones are most commonly used to guide traffic on roadways, on highways, and in parking lots. Usually made of flexible PVC, cones may include a reflective stripe for added visibility. Some cones feature an injection PVC mould for heavier, more durable performance, while others feature a flow PVC mould that is lighter and more economical.
Size requirements for traffic cones differ based on the situation. 18" cones, which is the minimum height for road usage, are best suited for low speed (60km/h or less) areas and daytime use. Ontario and Alberta require a 4" stripe on 18" cones, while the rest of Canada require a 6" stripe. 28" and 36" cones are necessary for high speed (70km/h or more) areas and nighttime use. While Ontario and Alberta still only require a 4" stripe on these cones sizes, the rest of Canada requires both a 6" and 4" stripe.
Similar to traffic cones, traffic delineators are best used for road work or in parking lots. Delineators feature a standard 42" high post, 100% LDPE construction, and two 4" highly reflective tape collars. There are different styles of delineator tops, both standard and T-top formats, and different base styles.
Both made from 100% recycled rubber, speed bumps and parking curbs are essentials to controlling traffic in busy areas. The rubber construction offers a durable and flexible solution that is resistant to corrosion, moisture, oil, and weather fluctuations. Both feature yellow stripes for added visibility and can be installed using rebar spikes.
The traffic safety options don't end with the items mentioned above. Crowd control barriers, pennants and flags, reflector kits, and safety batons all have something to offer when it comes to traffic safety equipment.
