Torque Wrench Selection Guide

From professional technicians working in automotive, aerospace and industrial environments, to DIYers working on bicycles and small engine equipment, torque wrenches are critical to ensuring fasteners are tightened to the exact tolerances required.

The guide below will assist you in selecting the correct torque wrench for your application.

What Is a Torque Wrench?

They are precision instruments designed to apply a precise amount of torque to a fastener. The user typically determines the needed torque value, with the torque wrench providing an alert once the desired value is achieved. Torque wrenches generally come in a variety of types and sizes to suit any project and, with proper care and maintenance, should provide reliable service for many years.

Types of Torque Wrenches

Pre-Set

As the name implies, pre-set torque wrenches are factory set and cannot be adjusted by the user. Pre-set torque wrenches are best suited for applications that require repeated torqueing to one unchanging value. The pre-set design also makes it impossible to over-torque the fastener.

Adjustable

Adjustable torque wrenches offer greater flexibility, as the user can set it to any required value within the tool′s operating scale. This scale usually appears on the handle of the wrench, most commonly in inch/pound, foot/pound or newton/meter measurements.

Drive Size

For torque wrenches, ¼", ⅜", ½", ¾" and 1" drives are the most common drive size offerings. The selection of optimal drive size is largely dependent on the sockets the user owns, the most common fastener sizes to be turned and the operating torque value(s) most commonly worked within.

Function Styles

Click-Type Torque Wrenches

The most common type of torque wrench, the click-type has the same functionality as a ratchet, with the added advantage of a distinct breaking action "click" sound when the desired torque value is achieved.

Dial-Type Torque Wrenches

Dial-Type torque wrenches are considered the most accurate and can be used to tighten and loosen fasteners. The torque value is displayed via an analog dial containing two needles, where one needle set to the desired torque value and the other set to zero. As torque force is applied, the second needle moves along the dial and when the two needles meet, the desired torque has been met.

Electronic-Type Torque Wrenches

Electronic torque wrenches use an electronic sensor to measure torque and display the value on a digital display, offering audible and visual indicators once the target torque value as been achieved. Their digital design also allows users to download information to a computer. While this style is the most expensive, it features four scales - ft/lbs, in/lbs, Nm and kg./cm – compared to the two seen on other styles.

Calibration & Recalibration

Every torque wrench should include a certificate of factory calibration at the time of purchase to ensure that the wrench has been properly tested and inspected. It is also recommended that torque wrenches be recalibrated annually or for every 5000 cycles, whichever occurs first.

A proper certificate of calibration should include:

A certificate of calibration is valid for one year beginning from the tool′s first use and not its date of manufacture or purchase.
